By the 1970s ODV was recognized as a stateswoman and pioneer. She was appointed to various governmental advisory boards.
Continuing her long-time involvement on the international scene, she acted as a consultant to several African and Caribbean nations.
In Swaziland, she and Zenani Dlamini Mandela organized a health, fashion and beauty consortium which provided essential personal grooming and hygiene information to women of limited resources.
